Getting Braces: What to Expect

Getting braces involves bonding brackets and a wire that are gently adjusted over regular visits; expect mild soreness after fittings and adjustments, with treatment usually spanning 12–24 months.

Braces are the most versatile way to straighten teeth. Here is what the experience is really like.

What happens when braces are fitted?

Fitting is painless: the teeth are cleaned and dried, brackets are bonded on, and a wire is placed. It takes about an hour and needs no numbing.

Will braces hurt?

You may feel pressure or tenderness for a few days after fitting and after each adjustment. Soft foods and, if needed, simple pain relief help; it settles quickly.

Living with braces

  • Avoid hard, sticky and very sugary foods that damage brackets
  • Brush after meals and clean between teeth carefully
  • Use orthodontic wax if a bracket rubs
  • Keep your adjustment appointments

How long does treatment take?

Most cases take 12–24 months with adjustments every few weeks. Compare your options in braces vs clear aligners.

Frequently asked questions

What foods should I avoid with braces?

Avoid hard foods (nuts, hard candy), sticky foods (chewing gum, toffee) and cut crunchy items like apples into pieces, to protect the brackets and wires.

How do I keep braces clean?

Brush after every meal, angle the brush around the brackets, and clean between teeth with interdental brushes or floss threaders.
