Early (Interceptive) Orthodontics for Kids

Interceptive (early) orthodontics guides a child’s jaw growth and erupting teeth between about ages 7 and 11 — catching bite and spacing problems early can simplify, shorten or even avoid braces later.

Some orthodontic problems are far easier to correct while a child is still growing. That is the idea behind interceptive orthodontics.

What is interceptive orthodontics?

It is early, growth-timed treatment that guides the jaws and incoming teeth — using space maintainers, expanders or partial braces — rather than waiting until all the adult teeth are in.

When should my child first see an orthodontist?

The Indian Orthodontic Society recommends a first orthodontic check by age 7, even though treatment (if any) may start later. An early check lets us spot issues while growth can still be guided.

What problems does early treatment address?

  • Crossbites and narrow jaws (with expansion)
  • Severe crowding or protruding front teeth
  • Thumb-sucking or mouth-breathing effects
  • Guiding erupting teeth into better positions

Will my child still need braces later?

Sometimes early treatment is all that is needed; more often it makes later braces or clear aligners simpler and shorter. It is planned by our orthodontist alongside Dr. Rajat’s pediatric care.

Frequently asked questions

What age should a child first see an orthodontist?

By age 7. Most won’t need treatment yet, but an early check catches problems while the jaws are still growing and easy to guide.

Does early treatment mean my child avoids braces?

Sometimes — and when braces are still needed later, early treatment usually makes them simpler and shorter.
