Caring for Your Baby’s Milk Teeth

Caring for Your Baby’s Milk Teeth

Clean your baby’s gums even before the first tooth, brush twice daily with a smear of fluoride toothpaste once teeth appear, and avoid sugary or milk bottles at sleep time to prevent early childhood decay.

Milk teeth guide eating, speech and the spacing of adult teeth — looking after them early matters.

When do I start cleaning my baby’s teeth?

Wipe the gums with a clean, damp cloth even before teeth appear. Once the first tooth erupts, brush twice a day.

How much toothpaste should I use?

Use a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste for under-3s, and a pea-sized amount from age 3 — supervising brushing until your child can do it well themselves.

How do I prevent early childhood (bottle) decay?

  • Avoid putting your baby to bed with a bottle of milk, juice or anything sweet
  • Don’t dip pacifiers in sugar or honey
  • Offer water between meals rather than sweet drinks
  • Wipe or brush after the last feed

If you spot white or brown spots on the teeth, see us early — early cavities in children are easier to treat.

Frequently asked questions

Is fluoride toothpaste safe for babies?

Yes — used in the correct tiny amount (a rice-grain smear for under-3s), fluoride toothpaste is safe and is the most effective way to prevent decay.

My baby won’t let me brush — what do I do?

Make it playful, brush at the same times daily, and try letting them hold a brush too. If it stays difficult, we can show you gentle techniques at a visit.
